Add-vise on bench vises

DSC_0004

Many of you have written for advise on adding a bench vise to your new,y finished workbenches and of course there are many choices out there. I am fortunate in that I have access to secondhand ones in the UK and a good one will sell for about £50 more or less. One vise I really like is the Czech-made vise sold by Veritas. The 9" vise is really solidly made, heavy duty and easy to use. It costs about $150 and here is the link.
In the UK, any if the early Record models works well and here you do have several choices made through the early decades of the last century to choose from. The Record 52E range and 53D have quick release mechanisms as do others. These sell for between £20 and £100 and £100 is not too much to pay for a good vise. I just looked on EBay.co.uk and there are close to a hundred secondhand ones that look good. Remember to spell vise with a c or and s. I'm not sure when we will get to the installation of the vise via YouTube but go to Building a Workbench with Paul Sellers to get the whole series including mounting the vise. It's dead clear and simple and just requires some muscle to get it in place a few times before concluding. If you are slight of weight, get help. These vises bite!

NOTE:Just so you know, Paul has a newer Workbench series. If you are interested in the updated version of Paul’s workbench please click the button down below. This page links to a cutting list, tools list, FAQS and much more.
