Last plane post - thoughts for technique

I really liked this photograph of some of the planes I have used on my testings, experiments and research.

All too often we are taught things by others and we cling to the teaching as rigidly as we grip the plane that could in many cases benefit the work better by being held loosely.

Look at these images and tell me I am wrong in the way I am holding my planes. I might correct you by saying you don't know, or I might say that there are many reasons for a high power pull and not a push, a side swipe for swift, localised 'lifts', or reversing the plane for long pulls full length.

Take a two-by-four (4x2 UK) and try these techniques. You will be training your upper body, and when pushing gets tough, pulling can reverse the pressures and be relaxing. Reversing the plane to a pull helps work awkward grain without changing ends or body position. This can be necessary on large tables where the only position is from the end, which could not be reached from say an 8' table.
